About Tetris

Stack falling tetrominoes to clear lines and rack up points. A true legend of puzzle gaming that has captivated players for decades.

How to Play Tetris

Rotate and position the falling tetrominoes to complete full horizontal lines. Completed lines disappear, giving you more space and points. The game speeds up over time. The game ends when the pieces stack to the top.

History of Tetris

Tetris was created in 1984 by Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov while working at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. The game became a worldwide phenomenon after Nintendo bundled it with the original Game Boy in 1989 — it sold over 35 million units and introduced an entire generation to puzzle gaming. The name comes from the Greek prefix "tetra" (all pieces have four segments) combined with Pajitnov's love of tennis. Tetris remains one of the best-selling games of all time across all platforms, and our free online version lets you play instantly in your browser without any download.

Tips & Tricks

  • 1.Always keep a flat surface — avoid leaving gaps or creating "overhangs" that are impossible to fill.
  • 2.Save the long I-piece (the straight bar) for the right moment to score a Tetris and clear four lines at once.
  • 3.Learn to rotate pieces before they land, not after — anticipation beats reaction at high speeds.
  • 4.Keep the stack as low as possible rather than rushing to clear single lines; low stacks give you more time to think.
  • 5.When the speed gets very high, focus on one column at a time and use the hard-drop to place quickly.
